Well。。。 It was pretty nice。 Not sure why I didn't love it。 Perhaps it was something about the characters, the writing style, the world-building or specific details of the plot。 Generally the plot was well-conceived and imaginative, but it just didn't leave me feeling keen to continue with the sequels。 I did like the second season of the HBO show better than the first one though, so perhaps I would like the other books。 Well, always wanted to read it and now I have, so。 Well。。。 It was pretty nice。 Not sure why I didn't love it。 Perhaps it was something about the characters, the writing style, the world-building or specific details of the plot。 Generally the plot was well-conceived and imaginative, but it just didn't leave me feeling keen to continue with the sequels。 I did like the second season of the HBO show better than the first one though, so perhaps I would like the other books。 Well, always wanted to read it and now I have, so。 。。。more

Parempi myöhään kuin ei milloinkaan! Sain viimein aikaiseksi tarttua Kultaiseen kompassiin HBO:n sarjan myötä。 Vaikka kirjan kohdeyleisöä ovat lapset ja nuoret, Pullman ei aliarvioi lukijoitaan ja olin jopa hieman yllättynyt tarinan synkkyydestä。 Kaiken kaikkiaan kivan erilainen fantasiakirja。

Oisín Reade

A well written fantasy book。 Found it a little hard to relate to our main character, a little more internal dialogue about the emotions of our main character would help。 During some scenes where something of large emotional significance happens our main character acts like a robot and I understand in extreme circumstances there is no time to feel but she must deal with the emotions at some point? Still very good and intriguing。

It’s meant to be a children’s/young teen book but it’s honestly one of my all time favourites。

Alex Knobloch

I just find it really really boring

I feel like I totally missed out not reading this as a kid。 One other thing, holy crow I am absolutely AMAZED at how well the tv series is doing adapting this trilogy!

Zayn Khan

My mom gave me this book as well as the other two as a kid。 Reading this was one of my favorite things to do after I got home from school。 About to finish the 3rd book。 I would definitely recommend the trilogy to others。

People love Harry Potter so much, but I feel like this one is just as good。 I'm continually surprised this one isn't more popular。 People love Harry Potter so much, but I feel like this one is just as good。 I'm continually surprised this one isn't more popular。 。。。more

Enjoyed reading this a bunch。 Big words and heavy thematic elements for a ten year old, the target audience or thereabouts, but that's never a bad thing。 Makes them want to read it twice。 Sad and moving。 Come to think of it, this book's probably about growing up。 Allegorically。 Well, I'm not a little boy anymore。The descriptions of objects and events was enthralling to me。 Great selection of verbs。 Enjoyed reading this a bunch。 Big words and heavy thematic elements for a ten year old, the target audience or thereabouts, but that's never a bad thing。 Makes them want to read it twice。 Sad and moving。 Come to think of it, this book's probably about growing up。 Allegorically。 Well, I'm not a little boy anymore。The descriptions of objects and events was enthralling to me。 Great selection of verbs。 。。。more

I’m maybe just too old to enjoy this more。 But the scenery is beautiful and the Idea behind the story is interesting and nothing you’d see everyday。

I thought it was a good read。 The concept of having ones soul out side of ones self is interesting。 It does make the "church" our to be the bad guy and in this case it was。 I thought it was a good read。 The concept of having ones soul out side of ones self is interesting。 It does make the "church" our to be the bad guy and in this case it was。 。。。more

The first chapter was a bit difficult to get into, but the characters come alive very quickly as the story develops。 I’m not 100% why most people give the book four star BUT the audiobook。。 FANTASTIC

I loved it—fast paced, beautifully written。 This was a dramatized audiobook and I usually avoid multiple narrators (Lincoln in the Bardo being an important exception), but this went down just fine。 On to Lyra’s adventures in Volume 2。

I have a very short review of the original trilogy on GR, HERE。 However, I read the original English version, which was called Northern Lights, and it's bad that GR doesn't have a listing for it (that I can find) with that title。 I have a very short review of the original trilogy on GR, HERE。 However, I read the original English version, which was called Northern Lights, and it's bad that GR doesn't have a listing for it (that I can find) with that title。 。。。more

The characters were gripping, the writing was great and extremely intresting, you never lose interest in what is going on and the world building is very unique。 I loved the mixture of science, myth and fantasy, that makes it so special and different to really anything on the market。 Honestly it's the G The characters were gripping, the writing was great and extremely intresting, you never lose interest in what is going on and the world building is very unique。 I loved the mixture of science, myth and fantasy, that makes it so special and different to really anything on the market。 Honestly it's the G 。。。more

A book I wish I'd gotten onto years ago because I found it incredibly enjoyable! I found Lyra to be a likeable character but most of all, I loved the world Pullman has created, in particular the daemons。 Also the armoured bears were a very cool part! Having watched the movie first, the ending difference is huge and I think the movie did not set up for future movies。 The book ending much was much better and also (because I'd seen the movie) I found it quite shocking! Another technically "YA" book with definitely more adult implications and questions of morality and religious topics。 I had watched the movie before reading and so I had those actors in my head。 However, that turned against me when I saw the ending of this book and the dark turn it took。 Definitely worth reading at any age, young and old alike。 A lesson in the lengths in which people will do unspeakable things in the name of religion and science。 Another technically "YA" book with definitely more adult implications and questions of morality and religious topics。 I had watched the movie before reading and so I had those actors in my head。 However, that turned against me when I saw the ending of this book and the dark turn it took。 Definitely worth reading at any age, young and old alike。 A lesson in the lengths in which people will do unspeakable things in the name of religion and science。 。。。more
